When Wishes Come True
by Per-Henrik Gürth

Story: 4
In this story a baby bear is sad and his mother wonders why. Little Bear tells his mom he is sad because his wishes never come true. Mother Bear asks Little Bear his wishes and he tells her all of his grand wishes. He has wished to be an astronaut and a pirate to name a few. After Little Bear is done telling Mother Bear all of his wishes Mother Bear reminds him that some of his wishes do come true. She explains the small wishes that he makes, like eating his favorite breakfast or watching the Northern Lights, do come true. This story was very sweet and teaches a good lesson. While all people have wishes it can seem they never come true. It isn’t until we think about the little things that we realize that most of the things we wish for actually do come true. The story is a nice dialog between mother and son and it flows nicely through to the end.

Illustrations: 4
The illustrations beautifully reflect the text. Images of the Arctic Tundra are captured with deep colors that transport the reader to the North Pole. There is one drawing that shows Mother Bear and Little Bear sitting on a snow patch. There are mountains and water in the background. The texture and tone of the Polar Bear fur is exquisite. A little fun fact, Polar Bears aren’t actually white. Their fur just looks white because it is hollow to help keep them warm. The artist captured this in his work and all of the images are beautiful.

Format: 5
The story format is perfect. A nice touch is that the words, “I Wish” are italicized and grow in size each time Little Bear says the words. It adds a nice effect to the intensity of the words. We all can all relate to Little Bears wishes and we have all had grand wishes that we wanted more than anything to come true. The format of the book enforces that feeling in a subtle but effective way.

Quality: 4
This book is intended for older kids. It has a protective dust jacket and is hardcover. The pages inside are glossy paper. If younger kids get a hold of this they will be able to rip the pages. If this book is intended to be ready to little kids it should be held by Mom or Dad.

The Overall Ahgoo Review rating is: 4.5
