Bats at the Beach
by Brian Lies

Story: 4.5
The bats are going to the beach. An educational synopsis about bats is hidden behind the fun story of bats having a picnic at the beach. Children will learn that bats are nocturnal, what they eat and how they hear things rather than see them. The read aloud factor is great here and children will love to hear the different voices made by the reader as the story progresses. In addition there is a song at the end written to The Battle Hymn of the Republic. It’s a lot of fun for kids and parents alike.

Illustrations: 4.5
The illustrations are also educational. While they depict a fictional scene of bats picnicing at the beach it also shows what they eat and various bat habits. The artwork is detailed and is stunning considering it is dark throughout most of the book. Kids will like pointing out their favorite parts and adding in their own words as they are read to.

Format: 5
The format rating is boosted because of the song at the end. Children love to sing and having a song included in the story is another way for children to become engaged while being read to. An excellent effort by the author for the format and overall creativity of the story.

The overall Ahgoo Review rating is: 4.5
