Tiger is an ordinary cat that likes to sleep in the library. He loves to hear a good story and is always begging the Old, Old Cat to tell stories from long ago and Ship Cat to tell stories from far away. He can’t get enough of a good story. When he gets locked in the library he tries to figure out how to get the stories out of the books. He licks the book, bites the book and stares at the book waiting to pounce on the story like a mouse. When the book flops open as if by magic Tiger stares at the picture. He remembers the story and as time goes on, the library is closed for the holidays, he actually learns to read. There is no stopping him then. In just a few pages he goes from an ordinary cat to an extraordinary cat that always has a tale to tell.
This book is a guided reading book and is intended to be used in the classroom. I love this book and it is an ideal book for reading aloud. The illustrations are a wonderful complement to the story and actually caused me to laugh out loud looking at Tiger as he tried to get the story to come out of the book. He is a very lovable character and children will like him very much. The book is separated into chapters and has a wonderful guide at the back for teachers to use. Here are some skills that can be addressed by reading this book aloud: (As stated in the back of the book)
- drawing inferences
- understanding homonyms (tale/tail)
- identifying specific words and phrases to support viewpoint
This story and the illustrations combined with the format and the reading guide make it a perfect book to read aloud. This is a great book, I hope that it is read in every classroom and every child’s bedroom.
